Capitalism has always been entangled with imperialism and racism. No one doubts the centrality of these oppressions to the slave-based plantation and colonial capitalism of the 19 th century. But racialand imperial domination were no less fundamental to the social-democratic, decolonizing capitalism of the mid-20 th century. Nor have they lost their structuring force in the globalizing, postcolonial capitalism of the present era.
